Two people died on Saturday as heavy thunderstorms and torrential rainfall swept across several governorates in the Sultanate of Oman. The severe weather event prompted emergency responses from civil defense teams who worked throughout the day to rescue residents trapped by rising floodwaters. The Oman thunderstorms have raised concerns about continued weather hazards as authorities warn of additional rainfall expected in the coming days.

According to the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority, emergency teams responded to 14 reports of people trapped inside vehicles in valley streams and water accumulations since Saturday afternoon. Rescue operations successfully saved nine individuals, while two fatalities were recorded during the incidents. The authority did not release additional details about the victims or the specific locations where the deaths occurred.

Continued Weather Warnings for Oman Thunderstorms

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center has issued alerts regarding the ongoing risks associated with the Oman thunderstorms expected to continue on Sunday. The meteorological agency warned that additional thundery rainfall is forecast across multiple governorates throughout the region. These weather systems may be accompanied by hail and active winds, creating hazardous conditions for residents and travelers.

The affected areas are expected to include Al Buraimi, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Dakhiliyah governorates, according to the warning center. Additionally, the capital region of Muscat is among the zones anticipated to experience the severe weather. Parts of North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah governorates are also expected to see impacts from the storm system.

Risks Associated with Seasonal Rainfall

Flash flooding remains one of the primary dangers during heavy rainfall events in Oman due to the country’s topography and arid climate. When intense precipitation occurs, dry valley beds known as wadis can quickly transform into fast-moving torrents, trapping vehicles and creating life-threatening situations. The sultanate experiences seasonal rainfall that can cause sudden and dramatic changes in weather conditions, particularly during certain times of the year.

However, emergency response teams have demonstrated their readiness to handle weather-related incidents, as evidenced by the successful rescue of nine people during Saturday’s events. The Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority maintains specialized equipment and trained personnel to respond to water-related emergencies across the nation. These capabilities are crucial during periods of intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall when multiple incidents may occur simultaneously.

Safety Measures During Severe Weather

Meanwhile, authorities have consistently advised residents to avoid crossing wadis during periods of heavy rain or when water is flowing through these channels. The dangers of attempting to drive through flooded areas have been highlighted through public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing weather-related casualties. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes and wait for floodwaters to recede rather than risk attempting crossings.

In contrast to typical weather patterns, the current system has affected a broader geographic area across the sultanate. The widespread nature of the Oman thunderstorms has required coordinated response efforts across multiple governorates simultaneously. Emergency services have been placed on high alert to respond quickly to any additional incidents that may occur as the weather system continues.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring weather conditions and issuing updates as the storm system progresses through Sunday. Residents in affected areas should remain vigilant and follow guidance from the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center regarding the evolving weather situation.
