Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has awarded the contract for the first phase of the comprehensive pedestrian pathway development project, known as Dubai Walk, in the Al Ras area. The initiative represents a significant step in transforming Dubai into a pedestrian-friendly city and enhancing individual mobility infrastructure across the emirate.
According to the authority, the first phase includes the implementation of the historic Al Ras route featuring 12 kilometers of pedestrian pathways and 5 kilometers of bicycle lanes. Additionally, the project will rehabilitate 10 artistic spaces in coordination with the Culture and Arts Authority, with participation from Emirati and local artists.
Dubai Walk Project Supports Urban Development Goals
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Roads and Transport Authority, explained that the comprehensive pedestrian master plan contributes to enhancing Dubai’s global competitiveness in pedestrian facilities and individual mobility. The Dubai Walk initiative aims to achieve one of the key targets of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, specifically the 20-minute city concept.
The project will provide infrastructure allowing more than 80 percent of residents to access services within 20 minutes of travel time. This aligns with the Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which focuses on improving community well-being and transforming Dubai into a walkable city.
Comprehensive Network Development Plans
The comprehensive master plan for developing pedestrian pathways encompasses an integrated network across 160 areas throughout the emirate. According to Al Tayer, the project includes implementing and developing 6,000 kilometers of pedestrian pathways across Dubai by 2040, representing a substantial investment in sustainable transportation infrastructure.
The authority stated that the development will also include constructing 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels to enhance connectivity between different areas. These structures will improve pedestrian safety and facilitate seamless movement across Dubai’s diverse neighborhoods.
Enhancing Pedestrian Safety and Cultural Identity
The Dubai Walk project emphasizes improving pedestrian traffic safety levels while connecting various areas with existing pedestrian pathways. The initiative incorporates creative, aesthetic, and cultural elements into individual mobility infrastructure, highlighting the unique identity of different neighborhoods.
Furthermore, the project aims to beautify public squares throughout Dubai and strengthen collaborative efforts with strategic partners in developing creative elements within transportation infrastructure and facilities. The authority noted that youth participation will play an active role through their involvement in proposing innovative ideas for pedestrian pathway design and associated amenities.
Ambitious Mobility Targets by 2040
The Roads and Transport Authority revealed that the comprehensive plan aims to increase the percentage of pedestrian and individual mobility trips from 16 percent in 2025 to 25 percent by 2040. This ambitious target reflects Dubai’s commitment to sustainable urban development and reduced reliance on private vehicles.
The master plan focuses on developing an accessible pedestrian network that meets safety standards and provides a comfortable environment for walkers. By integrating artistic and cultural components, the project seeks to create distinctive pedestrian experiences that reflect Dubai’s modern vision while celebrating local heritage.
The Roads and Transport Authority has not announced a specific timeline for completing the first phase of the Al Ras historic route. However, the project represents the initial step in a long-term vision extending to 2040, with subsequent phases expected to roll out across the emirate’s 160 designated development areas.
