Abu Dhabi University hosted its “Innovation Day 5.0” event on November 1, 2025, at its Al Ain campus, bringing together more than 300 students to explore the latest developments in artificial intelligence and software engineering. The event, organized in collaboration with leading technology companies including IBM, Microsoft, Huawei, Zaka, Google Developer Groups, and SIFOR, highlighted the critical role of young talent in achieving the UAE’s Vision 2031, particularly in diversifying the nation’s non-oil economic resources.

The innovation day featured eight main sessions and workshops that allowed students to experience cutting-edge AI technologies firsthand. Additionally, the event concluded with the finals of the IBM watsonx Orchestrate student competition, where participants presented innovative solutions using artificial intelligence across various fields.

Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering Take Center Stage

The comprehensive program included sessions on topics such as “AI in Enterprise versus Hobbies” and “How to Build Smart Applications,” according to the university’s announcement. Students gained practical exposure to developing enterprise-level applications and advanced programming techniques, creating a unique opportunity to connect academic learning with real-world industry challenges.

Professor Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, emphasized the transformative economic potential of this technology sector. “Studies indicate that artificial intelligence could add approximately $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, and the Middle East and North Africa region is expected to contribute significantly to this growth,” he stated.

Supporting the UAE’s Knowledge-Based Economy

The Innovation Day 5.0 event aligned with the UAE’s National Coding Day initiative, known as “Emirates Codes,” reinforcing the university’s commitment to preparing students with essential skills for digital leadership. According to Professor Aouad, the university recognizes that this transformation depends on developing a generation of creative young people ready to face future challenges.

Ken Hobson, Chief Technology Officer for Data, AI, and Security at IBM, highlighted the practical value of the partnership. “This event is not just a competition, but a practical opportunity for students to gain real experience in the field of artificial intelligence and build smart solutions that help shape the future of business,” he said.

Preparing Students for Digital Economy Challenges

The event supported Abu Dhabi University’s strategic objectives in enhancing student readiness for the digital economy and encouraging collaboration between academic institutions and other sectors. Meanwhile, it contributed to the UAE’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy founded on innovation.

Adel Khelifi, Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at Abu Dhabi University, noted the transformative power demonstrated by the event. “Innovation Day 5.0 shows the transformative power of artificial intelligence and software engineering in shaping the future of technology,” he explained, adding that students had the opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-life situations and collaborate with industry leaders.

Industry Partnerships Drive Innovation Forward

Through initiatives like Innovation Day in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering, Abu Dhabi University continues to support innovation, scientific research, and cross-sector collaboration. The university has earned recognition as one of the top three universities in the UAE and among the world’s top 250 universities according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026.

However, the projects showcased during the event reflected the creativity and problem-solving mindset that will drive the next phase of digital innovation in the UAE. In contrast to traditional academic exercises, these student-led initiatives demonstrated practical applications with potential real-world impact, positioning graduates as leaders in an AI-driven world.

The university has not announced the specific date for its next innovation event, though its continued partnership with major technology companies suggests additional collaborative initiatives will follow. The institution remains committed to achieving academic excellence and enhancing its global competitiveness while preparing graduates to lead innovation and create positive impact within the UAE and beyond.
