Venezuelan trainer Jose D’Angelo, based in the United States, is seeking his first victory at the Dubai World Cup evening when he sends out Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion Bentnornato to compete in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (Grade 1) next Saturday. This marks D’Angelo’s third participation in Dubai as he aims to add a prestigious international win to his growing list of accomplishments with the talented sprinter.

D’Angelo previously finished sixth with Jesus Team in the 2021 Dubai World Cup, while Caramel Chip and Run Classic competed in the 2024 editions of the Godolphin Mile and Dubai Golden Shaheen without securing top positions. However, his fortunes have shifted dramatically in recent months with a breakout performance at the Breeders’ Cup.

Breeders’ Cup Success Powers Dubai Campaign

The year 2025 brought remarkable success for the Venezuelan trainer when Bentnornato and Shisospicy swept the sprint races at the Breeders’ Cup within less than one hour at Del Mar in November. According to D’Angelo, careful planning throughout the year contributed to this achievement, noting that both horses competed at multiple tracks, demonstrating their ability to adapt to travel and strong competition.

The trainer emphasized his desire to achieve more victories, particularly on the international stage. He stated that he continuously seeks development and competition in the world’s most prominent races, positioning himself among elite trainers in global thoroughbred racing.

Bentnornato’s Path to Championship Status

Bentnornato has shown notable development since finishing third in the 2024 Saudi Derby (Grade 3). The horse subsequently achieved important victories, most notably in the Gallant Bob Stakes (Grade 2), followed by a second-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint before capturing the title the following year.

D’Angelo explained that the horse possesses exceptional talent and strong focus. Additionally, he noted that Bentnornato’s loss in Saudi Arabia came at a distance that did not suit him, expressing confidence in the horse’s ability to deliver a strong performance in Saturday’s Dubai Golden Shaheen race.

New Qualifying Agreement Benefits Top Contenders

Bentnornato benefits from a new reciprocal agreement between the Dubai Racing Club and Breeders’ Cup, alongside Forever Young and Ethical Diamond. The arrangement allows direct qualification through the “Win and You’re In” initiative, strengthening ties between two of racing’s most significant events.

Meanwhile, D’Angelo expressed hope for victory next Saturday at the Dubai World Cup evening despite strong competition. He confirmed that the starting gate position will be an important factor, indicating his preference for breaking from outside barriers to give his sprinter room to maneuver.

Trainer Prepares for Dubai Golden Shaheen Challenge

The trainer arrived in Dubai early to monitor Bentnornato’s training sessions, expressing his happiness at being present for the preparations. He indicated that the owners would join before the anticipated race, underscoring the significance of this Dubai World Cup campaign for all connections.

In contrast to his previous Dubai experiences, D’Angelo now brings a horse competing at the highest level. Bentnornato is considered one of the most prominent horses currently participating in Dubai, with significant aspirations attached to him for achieving a new milestone at one of the world’s most important horse racing evenings.

The Dubai Golden Shaheen on Saturday will reveal whether Bentnornato can transfer his Breeders’ Cup Sprint form to Meydan Racecourse. While authorities have not confirmed the final field or post positions, the outcome will significantly impact D’Angelo’s international training reputation and could mark a breakthrough moment in his Dubai World Cup participation history.
