Some Coptic-Americans have a simple, straightforward, worldview: ‘Everything about America is great. Everything America ever did or will ever do is right. And, if you think otherwise, why the hell are you here?” In their minds, if you chose to emigrate to America, you must love EVERYTHING about it, wholesale, no exception, including George W. Bush, Hiroshima, Vietnam, white supremacy, McDonald’s, Las Vegas, Fox News, donuts, …, and, most importantly, Donald Trump.
In recent years the menu of things I am expected to love has expanded to include grabbing women by the pussy, operating fake universities and fraudulent charities, nepotism, sleeping with porn stars, and a bunch of other weird stuff.
I happen not to hold any of these activities in high esteem, but there are other things about America that I love: technological dynamism, respect for the individual, the rule of law, the absence of social classes, meritocracy, secularism, the absence of petty corruption, tolerance for risk, marketing innovations, multi-cultural communities, decentralization of government, world-class universities, … I also love Yosemite, Yellowstone, Ernest Hemingway, Norman Rockwell, Louis Armstrong, … and much, much more.
