Al Jazira has ended a decade-long wait to reach the final of the UAE President’s Cup, securing their place in the 2025-2026 championship match after defeating title holders Shabab Al Ahli 1-0 in the semi-final at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium. Bruno Oliveira scored the decisive goal in the 47th minute, sending the Abu Dhabi club to their first UAE President’s Cup final since the 2015-2016 season.
The victory marks Al Jazira’s fifth appearance in the final of the prestigious UAE football competition. Their last triumph came in 2015-2016 when they claimed their third title against Al Ain, winning 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Historic Victory Continues Al Jazira Success in Al Ain
The semi-final win represents Al Jazira’s fourth crucial victory on Al Ain stadiums over the past decade. The Abu Dhabi side revived memories of their 2015-2016 campaign when they defeated the same opponent 3-2 at Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium before lifting the trophy.
Additionally, Al Jazira has maintained a strong record against Shabab Al Ahli in important matches at Al Ain venues. In the 2021-2022 season, they won the UAE Super Cup at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, prevailing 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Last season, the club secured the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Cup title with a 2-1 victory over the same opponent at the identical venue.
Coach Praises Team Performance and Fighting Spirit
Dutch manager Marino Pusic expressed his satisfaction with the achievement, congratulating the players, management, and supporters. According to the coach, Al Jazira controlled most of the match except for the opening 20 minutes against a strong opponent.
Pusic highlighted goalkeeper Ali Khaseif’s crucial early saves that gave the team confidence to regain control of the game. The manager acknowledged that a legitimate goal was disallowed at the end of the first half but emphasized his team’s resilience in not letting the decision affect their performance.
UAE President’s Cup Final Awaits After Ten-Year Absence
However, Pusic remained cautious about celebrating prematurely, noting that reaching the final after ten years is significant but the job remains unfinished. The coach stressed that his squad must prepare thoroughly for the championship match to secure the title.
Meanwhile, the prospect of playing the final at Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium provides an additional advantage for Al Jazira. According to Pusic, competing on their home ground offers extra motivation for the players as they pursue their fourth UAE President’s Cup crown.
Manager Committed to Club’s Future Success
In contrast to speculation about his future, Pusic clarified his position with the club, stating he is still in his first season and uncertain about what lies ahead. The Dutch tactician expressed his happiness working in the country and with his current squad.
The manager confirmed he signed a two-year contract and his desire is to remain and help the team achieve its objectives. His comments suggest stability in the technical leadership as Al Jazira prepares for their most important match in a decade.
The final date and Al Jazira’s opponent have not yet been confirmed by tournament organizers. The Abu Dhabi club will await the outcome of the second semi-final to determine which team they will face in their quest to end the ten-year trophy drought in the UAE President’s Cup.
