Some Observations about Older People (I’m One of Them.)

We can think of every human being as having a transmitter and a receiver. When he talks, that’s his transmitter working, and when he listens, it is his receiver. As people grow old, their receivers go bad, and all their energies go to their transmitters. In plain language, older people, especially men, would much rather talk than listen. (This, of course, is not true for everyone, but it is common.)

In some cases the receiver goes out completely and the man shows no interest in hearing anything you have to say. All he wants from you is to listen to him. Sometimes it is funny to watch two old men having a conversation: while one is talking, the other is bored to death, waiting for the slightest opening to jump in and start talking himself.

There is a common belief that older people are wise. There is no truth to that. People do not grow wiser as they age; they just become more of who they are and have always been – A wise man becomes wiser, and a stupid man becomes more stupid. A vain man becomes more vain, and a humble man more humble. A greedy man becomes more greedy, and a generous one more generous, and so on. (Witness current events for a glaring illustration.)

Older people tend to become more pious, and they go out of their way to show it – by frequenting houses of worship, carrying prayer beads, etc. Not because they have seen the light, but because they know all the sins they have been hiding, and dread the thought that they will soon have to answer for them.

An old person remembers things that happened half a century ago, but forgets what he had for breakfast today. That is not Alzheimer’s. If you suspect that you have Alzheimer’s, chances are that you don’t. People who have it never understand that they do.
