Have I Been Brainwashed?
Being exposed to the US media most of the time, I find myself gradually accepting some of their views on the current crisis. Then, after I listen to the Russian side of the story, some things start to look different. “Well, you’re just a naïve customer!” the reader might conclude. “Hardly!” would be my response. My crusty old brain has been around the block a few times; it dug into Chekhov and Hemingway, Voltaire and St. Francis; and did not shrink from questioning powerful narratives. What is it, then? The truth is: anyone can be brainwashed under a sustained barrage of biased information.
How do you know if you’ve been brainwashed? Here is a mish-mash of 13 useful clues (in no particular order):
1. If you believe that you cannot be brainwashed, you have been brainwashed.
2. If you believe that I have been brainwashed and you have not, you have been brainwashed.
3. If you find yourself completely believing one side of a story, and totally rejecting the other side, you’ve been thoroughly brainwashed.
4. If they made you believe that some foreigners actually target babies for killing – you’ve been cheaply brainwashed.
5. If you believe that some politicians eat babies in a pizzeria, you have been hopelessly brainwashed. (There seems to be something about babies in the brainwashing business.)
6. If you believe that certain races/nationalities can do no wrong, you’ve definitely been brainwashed.
7. If you believe that there is such a thing as a free press, rest assured that they have brainwashed you.
8. If you believe that backwardness is caused by insufficient religiosity – you’ve been badly brainwashed.
9. If they made you believe that the Iraq war was caused by “faulty” intelligence – you’ve been embarrassingly brainwashed.
10. If you believe that horses fly, or donkeys speak, you’ve been subjected to a premium brainwash.
11. If they made you believe that you “honor” women by marrying 4 of them at a time, you’ve been irreparably brainwashed.
12. If you believe in things such as manifest destiny, exceptionalism, divine mandate, … etc., you have been surely brainwashed.
13. If you believe that taking communion from a common cup in a pandemic is ok, you’ve been suicidally brainwashed.
This is just a sample. The list is too long to enumerate.
