“Nobody wants to be enlightened!” declared my well-meaning…

“Nobody wants to be enlightened!” declared my well-meaning friend as he counseled me to tone down my comments on superstition and religious zealotry. I did not take his advice to heart, but now I realize that he may have been right. Indeed, no one seems to want to get enlightened (aside from those who are already enlightened.) People believe in whatever they believe NOT because they were never exposed to the light, but because of deep-seated psychological factors, mostly revolving around one of the 4 primeval F’s – FEAR. (The 4 F’s are the basic drivers of human (and animal) behavior – Feeding, Fighting, Fear, … , and I forget the 4th.)

Fear is not a weakness to be ashamed of. It is a natural emotion that evolved in us to ensure survival. We have a fear of the unknown, a fear of danger, a fear of punishment, a fear of death, and many other fears. In some of us these fears can be strong enough to interfere with the ability to reason. Those individuals will be superstitious no matter how much exposure to enlightenment they get.

On the other hand, we do observe a drastic difference in the levels of superstition between populations, for example ~30% in Northern Europe vs 99% in the Middle East. This tells us that over the long haul people do get enlightened, (but perhaps with a time constant of hundreds of years.)
