A Fictional Tale of Magic, Murder, and Mayhem in Ancient Egypt

Once upon a time a political struggle erupted in the Royal Egyptian Court. A dissident prince wanted to take one of the ethnic minorities out of the country and establish a new state in a neighboring land. The king, on the other hand, wanted to preserve national unity and the integrity of the State.

Rather than try the separatist prince for treason, the noble Pharaoh opted for negotiations. The prince responded by engaging in terrorism. He possessed magical powers which he used to perpetrate murder and destruction on a spectacular scale. The most notorious of his acts was the magical killing of every first-born Egyptian male in one fell swoop, including the crown-prince. You can imagine the wailing and the grief all over Egypt the next morning.

And that was not all. He used his magic to poison the Nile, summon an onslaught of frogs and locusts, and inflict a variety of pestilences on innocent civilians. Poor Pharaoh, helpless against such powers, and stricken with grief for the massive loss of life, had to yield to the demands of the separatists.

But this was not enough for the ambitious prince. He used magic again to hypnotize the Egyptians and make them agree to “lend” their jewelry, vessels, and precious possessions to the separatists, who then eloped with all the loot in the middle of the night. Since that was not part of the separation agreement, the king was left with no option but to pursue the thieves. But the prince again used his magic to drown the king and all his army in the sea. The End!

No! Actually that was not the end. The prince used his magic powers one last time to hypnotize future generations and make them believe that this actually happened.

Note: If this reminds you of the exodus story, it is, as it would have been written from the point of view of the Egyptians.
