Being a Republican is one thing, and being Trumpian is…

Being a Republican is one thing, and being Trumpian is another matter entirely.

A Republican is someone who values personal responsibility and individual initiative; believes in free markets and small government; opposes regulation and social safety nets. He/she wants to keep their money, and the poor to be helped through charity, not government programs. A Republican is typically conservative, (i.e. resistant to change,) religious (or likes to be seen as such,) pro-life, and for law-and-order.

I do not subscribe to this worldview, but someone can have such beliefs and still be an honorable person, (sort-of).

Being Trumpian, however, has nothing to do with any of that. Few Trump fans I know can understand, let alone articulate, these principles. To them it is all about the man. They see him as a handsome, smart, and witty heart-throb, (if you can fathom that;) a kick-ass winner who gets all the girls. They swoon in ecstasy at the sight of his yellow hair garishly drenched in cosmetics. They laugh their heads off when he mocks a paraplegic or clowns around on stage.

Let us “call a spade a spade”: these are not Republicans! Nor are they conservative! They are just cult followers! That’s all. No different from the followers of David Koresh, the Rajneesh, or Jim Jones. They are not interested in a competent, accountable, chief executive; they need an idol to worship, a master to lord it over their souls.

Now, how can a person so lacking of charisma command such a vast cult following? Most likely it is the fact that his presence in the highest office lends legitimacy to their basest impulses – hatred of blacks and foreigners; aversion to facts, contempt of culture; worship of money; end-justifies-the-means morality, etc.
