“Ramadan is a time when memories, both beautiful and challenging, come flooding back to me each year. The aroma of delicious food, the laughter echoing from the corners of the house, the gentle breeze, the rain, the scent of the soil, my siblings around the table, and images of orange walls and the orange trees doing parkour with the camaraderie of my neighborhood, the Moroccan series Salone Chahrazad and Bnat Lalla Menana, the collective energy of the community all added to the charm of Ramadan. The month of family gatherings, sharing moments of love, appreciating food, and showing compassion towards the poor and needy. But It was instilled in me that fasting during Ramadan was a requirement of my faith, a way to demonstrate my devotion to religion to earn a place in heaven.
As I grew older and became more independent in my thinking, I realized that the pressure to conform and the lack of personal choice in observing Ramadan was oppressive. I questioned whether I truly wanted to fast and if it was the only way to demonstrate my gratitude to God. And if not fasting Ramadan will cost me also beautiful memories. I came to understand that my spiritual journey was a personal one, and I had the right to choose my path to approach and observe Ramadan guided by my introspection, personal values, and individual choices, and chose to fast not because of external obligation, imposed laws. But because fasting is a form of self-care, a way to cleanse my body and mind, practice mindfulness, embrace the freedom to choose my spiritual path, and recognize that the principles of Ramadan, such as self-discipline, self-reflection, empathy, and generosity, are not confined to a single month but are values that should be practiced throughout the year. While being mindful of the cultural significance and traditions associated with Ramadan. I embrace the freedom to choose how I observe Ramadan and express my spirituality and acknowledge that my relationship with Ramadan has evolved, and embrace the complexities and contradictions that come with it, celebrate the cultural significance of Ramadan, the cherished memories of family gatherings, and the traditions that hold meaning for me. But I also embrace my autonomy and the freedom to chart my spiritual path, unencumbered by societal expectations or religious obligations.”
