It is not often that a country has a science named after it. In fact there’s only one, and the science is ‘Egyptology’. That is so not only because Egypt’s history stretches far back in time, (others also do,) but because the ancient Egyptians left so much for the world to study, analyze, and learn from.

I am not saying this to brag about my ancestry. To the contrary, I believe that one has no right to be proud of his ancestors unless he also makes them proud of him. Sadly, modern-day Egyptians would not make their ancestors proud. They rank near the bottom of every list of meaningful achievement, be that education, science, art, Industry, health, happiness, you name it.

The only field in which Egyptians now excel is religiosity. They rank first in the Middle East by percentage of professed religious nuts. This dubious distinction is rather like being the craziest guy in the insane asylum, since the region is the world’s epicenter for breeding superstition and obscurantism.

It is tempting to blame the 7th-century Arab conquest for Egypt’s sorry predicament. But reality is more complicated – Egypt as a superpower had been gone on its own over a millennium before the Arabs, but it had remained a sparkling civilization. The Arabs certainly extinguished that aspect of it.

  1. This is Nabil and Mary. I am enjoying your philosophy and insight. I agree with you. We are still in Altadena in the same house and staying inside most of the time like most people. How are you and how is the rest of the family? How is your brother and his family? I talked to Kamal Zaher and Elsa, they are in Moscow because Elsa is in treatment from Cancer. Where do you live now? in the same house we visited you before? This is Mary’s Facebook site, I don’t have one. Let us stay in touch! Nabil

  2. Farid,
The Golden Age of Humanity occurred in Spain under Arab rule. Jews, Christians and Muslim scholars worked together peacefully and made Spain the “Jewel of the World” The great Jewish scholar, Ibn Mymoun, was a student of Ibn Rushd and the well known Christian scholar

  3. St. Thomas Aquinas
was influenced by Ibn Rushd who taught that faith and science compliment each other.
As Arab influence declined, Queen Isabella reconquered Spain and banished Jews and Muslims and ushered in the Age of Inquisition.
Around the same time the Arab scholars excelled at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. And, the two Centers of Learning( Baghdad and Cordova) were connected by the super highway cable of the Arabic language.
My point: We should give credit to the early distinguished Arabs who brought enlightenment to foreign lands.
Farid: I hope that some day you will visit Spain and to witness its Arab legacy.
I would like to say more in my next message en Shaa Allah.
